Gigantic Inflatable Refugee arrives in Kopenhagen on 23rd of May

May 2016

On May 23rd and 24th Belgian visual artists Schellekens & Peleman will sail with their 6m high art work 'Inflatable Refugee' on the Danish wooden galeas 'Hawila' in the port of Copenhagen. On May 23rd the Hawila will moor with the art work at height of the Amaliekaj and the opera around 15h00.

Schellekens & Peleman create art works in an art-for-all philosophy with which they want to invite the audience to reflect on geopolitical evolutions, migration and identity. As the artists feel, more than ever, the necessity to take up an active role in the public debate and to make critical remarks on what's happening nowadays in society. The surrealism of this iconic figure eliminates fear as being the leitmotiv of many discussions and debates.

Inflatable Refugee brings a message. His presence is undeniable. By introducing the surreal figure of Inflatable Refugee in a city, citizens are aware that something is different, something is brought into their urban life that they did not see before. Inflatable Refugee will be the citizen’s fellow citizen for a certain amount of time.
