Two DAMN° projects at imm cologne

January 2017
DAMNº curated two exhibitions at last week’s imm cologne:
the MAD Office
Fashion and Design centre MAD Brussels showed the work of 11 Brussels-based designers at imm cologne. MAD’s mission is to promote (young) entrepreneurs, to encourage new initiatives, and to support all the passionate people in fashion and design. In Cologne, MAD proved to be an excellent ambassador for the thriving design scene in the Belgian capital. Its white IMM booth, designed by DAMN° Art Director Siegrid Demyttenaere, attracted much attention. MAD Office was designed as a creative co-working space inviting anyone to come and join in on a brainstorming session, to (co-)work on a project, or to simply share ideas and inspiration. In preparation for the grand opening this spring of its new building located in the heart of Brussels, MAD showcased its chosen talents at imm cologne, offering visitors to the fair a sneak peek at what to expect in its new home, as well a chance to win a two-night stay in Brussels. The MAD Office presented the black, grey, and white office furniture that will be inhabiting its monochrome white co-working space: creations by Brussels-based designers Alain Berteau, Alain Gilles, Benoît Deneufbourg, Beavershausen, Coralie Miessen, Hors Pistes, Jean-François d’Or, Julien Renault, Nathalie Dewez, PJ Mares, and Sylvain Willenz.
In-Formation by Ross Lovegrove & Alcantara
DAMN° invited Ross Lovegrove, a pioneer of biomorphic aesthetics, to work with ALCANTARA® material in making an installation at IMM. The London-based product designer was pleased to accept. “It’s a very intelligent material and a highly durable alternative to animal-based products”, he remarked, proceeding to create In-Formation, inspired by the logic and beauty of the rock formations he saw in Petra (Jordan). The piece incorporates technology and materials science to achieve an intelligent organic form, an aesthetic expression fit for the 21st century. The installation was on display between halls 3 and 11, a busy passageway at the fair. Thousands of visitors passed by to admire and touch this creation made of 100% ALCANTARA®, a synthetic yet natural-looking, soft material. Many selfies were also taken on the poufs, with the ‘rock formation’ as a backdrop. DAMN° organised a press conference as well, not to mention a well-attended party at Cologne's iconic Die Bastei restaurant, to celebrate the fruitful collaboration between Ross Lovegrove, Alcantara, and DAMN° – majestic view of the Rhine included.
