Bill Viola: The Moving Portrait

Exhibition, National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C., USA.

Until May 7, 2017
Offered here is a new interpretation of the work of the pioneering video artist’s career-long experimentation with portraiture.
Bill Viola has long been recognised for his ground-breaking and masterful use of video technologies, creating poetic pieces that explore the spiritual and perceptual side of human experience and search for a deeper understanding of the world around us.
The exhibition not only sheds light on 40 years of practice but also the ways that portraiture extends beyond likeness. Visitors are invited to embark on a journey, one that begins with raw and unnerving self-portraits and moves through some poignant portrayals of the human life cycle.
