Tuomas Markunpoika at Gallery Fumi
The designer's rounded, pastel-hued pieces go on show at London's Gallery Fumi
Tuomas Markunpoika is presenting his work at London's Gallery Fumi until 8 September, marking the first time that the artist has shown at the space.
Through his first solo show, Markunpoika – a graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven – is showing a range of objects that best-sum up his practice and ideologies.
Named Contra Naturam, each work is designed to explore the relationshp between artificial and natural, and craft and industrial materials. The artist creates each piece by building layers of ancient Moroccan Tadelakt plaster on top of a ductile synthetic material, before reworking its shape and texture with spatulas and pallete knives.
"Adopting rich colour variations, the collection exhibits a unified vocabulary of softly-edged, organic shapes – stripped to the essential, the works appear to simultaneously curve inwards and outwards, seamlessly blending into a fluid rhythm of line and angle. Engaging with notions of craft and value, and advancing the artist’s stylistic language, Contra Naturam offers a testament to the elegant complexity of Markunpoika's aesthetics," commented the gallery.
Contra Naturam is on show at Gallery Fumi, 2 Hay Hill, Mayfair, London from 29 June to 8 September.
