Hella Jongerius – Breathing Colour
The exhibition comes to Rotterdam's Museum Boijmans van Beuningen
Following a successful stint at London's Design Museum, Breathing Colour by Hella Jongerius travels to The Netherlands – finding a home at Rotterdam's Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
After more than fifteen years of colour research, designer Hella Jongerius presents a series of spatial installations that show the often unused potential hues and shades.
Together with artist Mathieu Meijers, Jongerius selected artworks from the museum's collection and curated a show intended to question our current preconceptions of colour, it also touches into the legacy of colour research. Her research is revisited by the artworks of the old masters, contemporary artists and craftsmen throughout the centuries.
"We select colours from colour fans or colour systems using numbers and codes. Knowledge about the complexity and construction of colour has been greatly simplified. There is a wide range of RAL codes and other colour systems but they do not shine and shimmer like the colours on the canvases of the old masters. The industry currently lacks the ambition to create intense colour recipes," Jongerius said.
Breathing Colour is on show at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen from 9 June to 12 August 2018.
