Färg & Blanche design studio
Collaborating with brands such as BD Barcelona Design, Gärsnäs, Zero, Petite Friture and Design House Stockholm, Swedish-French design duo Färg & Blanche also experiments and produces its own collections and limited pieces for galleries. Known for creative stamina, it merges techniques and creates brand new material categories, as for the recent sewing of furniture in metal or wood sheets. The design duo has been experimenting with what they call extreme sewing for furniture for many years. The pair pushes the boundaries of what is possible to do with a sewing machine in textile, felt, leather, and latterly with its unique technique Wood TailoringTM, and the stitching directly onto 0.5mm thick metal sheets, such as brass and aluminium. The sewing machine stitches directly on to the wood in order to join different parts together, while at the same time creating patterns.
‘For us, it is not the material that gives the largest fascination but the way to use it or the combination of different manufacturing techniques, regardless if the base material is wood, metal or textile. For wood tailoring, we had to invest in expensive machines to be able to try and find the right way to do it. Now we are really happy, after all this research and hundreds of hours behind the sewing machine to collaborate with companies like B.D Barcelona and Gärsnäs. For us, this technique is a new way to attach pieces together, hard with hard and hard with soft, and we are developing others project with that.’ But are design companies prepared? ‘We first invested
in our own sewing machine to figure out how to make the production, and then taught the manufacturing process to furniture companies about how to do it. We even had discussions regarding who should manufacture it: is it a woodworker or a seamstress?’
DAMN°66 Materials presents products that are the new generation of products. Says Productivity editor Patrizia Coggiola about the Matching Thread trend:
"Use design as a way to make a positive impact on the collective environment. Promote collaboration, and establish the use of quality workmanship. Preserve the ties to our origins. Open up towards a contemporary dual soul, where a new language is born from a combined dialogue. An intuitive sense for decoration connects artisans, designers, and companies around the globe."
