Combining a rigorous and holistic approach to design with thoughtful details and high-quality execution

January 2018
Maharam introduces a new collection of accessories developed exclusively for Japan under the creative direction of Scholten & Baijings. Combining a rigorous and holistic approach to design with thoughtful details and high-quality execution, Scholten & Baijings has collaborated with Maharam since 2014, and the new collection translates Maharam ’s aesthetic for Japan: ‘Japanese craft, industry, material or culture were top of our minds as we developed this collection,’ says the designers. ‘We want to want the new product we’re designing. If we don’t want to live with it, why would anyone else want to buy it?’ The textiles by Scholten & Baijings for Maharam (Bright Cube, Bright Grid, Mesh, and Tracery) investigates colour densities built up by parallel and perpendicular lines. In Scholten’s words, ‘The density of the grid determines how one experiences colour, and gives the colour a more airy appearance than a monochromatic colour plane. A nine-metre piece of fabric that shows the whole repeat has to be just as interesting as a single metre of fabric.’

DAMN°66 Materials presents products that are the new generation of products. Says Productivity editor Patrizia Coggiola about the Matching Thread trend:

"Use design as a way to make a positive impact on the collective environment. Promote collaboration, and establish the use of quality workmanship. Preserve the ties to our origins. Open up towards a contemporary dual soul, where a new language is born from a combined dialogue. An intuitive sense for decoration connects artisans, designers, and companies around the globe."
