The Brightest Black
Vivian Sassen
The photos that Dutch artist Vivian Sassen takes in Africa don’t conform to any slideshow of conventional clichés, but that might be because they aren’t really about the continent in the straightforward sense. There’s no hustle, child soldiers or squatted hi-rises, and her work neither meets our expectations of documentary, fashion photography, portraits or landscapes, instead hovering in strangely fascinating limbo between the genres.
