Haphazard Growth in a Land of Plenty
Shanghai's new suburbia
Over the past decade the erratic pattern of building and decision-making in Shanghai have seen to it that any sort of identity is, at best, fragmented. Old formulas and new models overlap and compete, often with diabolical side effects. most neglected in the sprawl are the ordinary citizens, a teeming mass, made up of individuals who hardly stand a chance at making any sense of the concept of home.
