On Holland’s belt-tightening measures
What a stir the Dutch have caused. With the announcement of a plan to cut the cultural budget in a severe and even arbitrary way, the creative world was up in arms. Protests pursued, at a magnificent level. The New York Times even stuck their nose in, declaring that there was a “cultural meltdown in progress” in the Netherlands. Alas, reality has bitten and things will necessarily alter — it remains to be seen just how.
