Striking a Balance

October 2016
Traditionally, the hosts and hostesses at Biennale Interieur are clothed in unique uniforms, with those of the previous editions created by such leading designers as Walter Van Beirendonck, Issey Miyake, and Kaat Tilley, as well as young designers like Damien Fredriksen Ravn and Ghent-based duo Cleo Baele and Sarah Bos of Black Balloon. The outfits for this year’s edition have been fashioned by none other than Ann Demeulemeester.
And with great pleasure, it seems. “The house of Ann Demeulemeester likes to carefully consider these types of commissions. The celebratory nature of this 25th anniversary made the project extra appealing. After all, it’s something that only happens once.” The Belgian label created a beautiful ensemble with silver touches. “The theme that curators OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen have come up with is Silver Lining. This is reflected in their scenography and this is what we have extended to the uniform worn by the hosts and hostesses. Not only does the clothing need to be practical – these people will be walking round in it for 10 full days – but it has to be fairly comfortable. It should also be striking. A simple but elegant uniform consisting of a little black jacket and twin-pleated black trousers, combined with quite a few silver touches. A silver shirt, shoes with silver accents, and a silver feather to accessorise. We didn’t want to go overboard but we do feel that we’ve struck the right balance between festiveness and simplicity.” Judge for yourself!
