The German designer was known above all for his lamps and light installations, including the table lamp "Bulb".

Maurer was born in 1932 on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance. In 1966 he produced his first lamp, "Bulb", a stylized oversized light bulb that is still being made. Maurer wrote the sentence: "Bad light makes you unhappy."

Maurer's work was based on the concept of surprise and disorientation. His more famous designs include the winged pear "Lucellino" (1992) and the ceramic shard lamp "Porca Miseria!" (1994), which can be seen alongside other pieces by Maurer in the Musem of Modern Art in New York. His whimsy will be missed.
