Allan Sekula: Okeanos

Exhibition, Thyssen-Bornemisza, Art Contemporary–Augarten Vienna, Austria.

Until May 14, 2017
Brought together here is a selection of seminal works that attest to the artist’s extensive research into the maritime space. Large photographic series and filmic works argue and demonstrate the ocean’s pivotal function in the world’s industrial systems, the vulnerability of its ecosystems, and the social precariousness of the actors engaged in sea-based industries. OKEANOS engages with a string of Allan Sekula’s most pointed critiques – of globalisation’s deregulated liquid spaces, its lax environmental policies and sub-par labour standards – that are as poignant today as ever before. The exhibition is inaugurated with a symposium bringing together various researchers, artists, and curators.
