Anthony Green: The life and death of Miss Dupont
Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK.
The paintings of Anthony Green are immediately recognisable from their characteristic irregular shapes and their acutely personal subject matter. This presentation focuses on a recently completed work, shown for the very first time. Three metres tall, it tells the story of his mother’s second marriage, seen through the eyes of her 13-year-old only child.
Green worked on the painting for over a decade; it incorporates a life-size figure of his mother, Madeleine Dupont, complete with fashionable attire, and contains a fragment salvaged from an earlier de royed work. Free anding elements extend the environment into the viewer’s space, while drawings and watercolours reveal the story of its making and documents and photographs testify to the tale.
