Exhibition, S.M.A.K., Gent, Belgium, until 8 february 2015.
S.M.A.K. opens its doors to a mid-career retrospective of the work of Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere from 2000 until now. Early sculptures in cloth from the 1990s are on show, in combination with her later work with horse skins that brought her international acclaim. These are intermixed with the wax sculptures that in recent years slowly transmuted from human body to vegetal form. The most representative sculpture in this series, Kreupelhout (Cripplewood), the imposing installation that De Bruyckere created for the 2013 Belgian pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia, has been entirely reconstructed for the occasion.
