Artists-in-residence programme
Being presented to the public for the first time are works created during residencies sponsored by the Fondation d’Entreprise Hermès in the Galerie Haute at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. ‘Condensation’ is a collective exhibition reminiscent of a waking dream, as it combines dream interpretation with an alchemical universe in order to closely investigate the ways in which our actions determine who we are.
Sixteen young artists, mentored since 2010 by Richard Deacon, Susanna Fritscher, Giuseppe Penone, and Emmanuel Saulnier, were given the opportunity to make use of the various production methods offered at Hermès (in crystal glassware, leather goods, jewellery, silks and textiles, and boot making) to create an original work.
The artists-in-residence were able to collaborate with several artisans who followed, guided, and counselled them during the various stages of their creative processes. Through this reciprocal exchange of techniques and skills, these young artists – for whom the question of production is crucial – were encouraged to incorporate into their work rare and exclusive materials, tools, and techniques. ‘Condensation’ presents the visions and individualities of this new generation of artists.
Hermès Corporate Foundation’s slogan: “Our actions define us”, endeavours to encourage people and organisations seeking to learn, acquire, transmit, and explore creative gestures, in the hope of constructing today’s world and inventing tomorrow’s. Guided by expertise and striving to find new ways to apply it, the Foundation explores two complimentary avenues: creativity and the transmission of skills.
