Design Anatomy: A Method for Seeing the World Through Familiar Objects
Exhibition, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo, Japan.
Design Anatomy is a project spearheaded by graphic designer Taku Satoh in 2001. It aims to dissect everyday products from a design perspective, attempting to thoroughly verify the origins of each. Daily we are surrounded by an uncountable number of products in our lives. Mass-produced items go through diverse processes and multiple stages before reaching the end user; the process of diligently deciphering each step is what the project is about. Just as scientific dissection involves the opening up and clarifying of living organisms, design dissection analyses the logo, package layout, and graphics of the finished product, with the product’s internal structures finely disassembled and observed.
