Explored here are citizencentred design approaches for the smart city. This concerns the role of designers in creating opportunities and practices for citizens, (social) entrepreneurs, and policymakers to achieve more liveable, sustainable, and sociable urban futures. Research labs from across Europe exchange their visions on the emerging practice of research through design. Their applied methodologies and outcomes are presented and used as a starting point for a broader discussion. In a conference, leading international experts discuss the implications of the rise of social media, big data, and other new media technologies in the practice of urban design. And workshops provide handson sessions around the many facets of citizencentred design for the smart city.
