From March 18, 2021 until September 6, 2021
The installation Earth Bits – Sensing the Planetary is part of maat Explorations, a programme framework launching at maat in 2021 featuring an ongoing series of exhibitions, public and educational projects delving into the multi-faceted subject of environmental transformation from various scholarly and experimental vantage points – it brings forward philosophical and political perspectives as well as socio-cultural and technological investigations interwoven in speculative and critical practices in the arts and design at large.
Earth Bits is a data-driven installation developed by the research and interaction design studio Dotdotdot that decodes the complexities of climate science by focusing on the anthropogenic phenomena and repercussions that underlie the environmental crisis – it is presented in graphic and digital contents, animated videos and an interactive station.
Realized with the scientific support of the European Space Agency (ESA), International Energy Agency (IEA) and EDP (Energias de Portugal) Innovation, the four sections of this unprecedented work, together demonstrate how the mundane flux of human outputs is vitally connected to the bio-systems of the Earth’s resources and outline the causes and effects of their resulting rapid depletion.
→ EARTH BITS inaugurates a focused series of programs – maat Explorations - devoted to critical ecological practice and climate science
→ with the scientific support and collaboration of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA)
→ a relevant public program series curated by the newly formed Climate Collective chaired by writer and curator T.J. Demos
