Judith Leiber: Crafting a New York Story
Exhibition, MAD, New York, USA.
Judith Leiber spent 65 years in the handbag industry, from being an apprentice in Budapest to the owner of an internationally renowned handbag company based in New York City. She was the only female pattern maker, and had the unusual ability to make a handbag from start to finish.
The exhibition tells the tale of this illustrious craftswoman, designer, and businesswoman, and includes handbags that encompass the history of her eponymous company. Although biographical in nature, it also explores the gendered significance of the handbag in 20th-century Western culture and the centrality of immigrant entrepreneurship in the fabric of New York.
