Exhibition, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, USA, until 27 September
Trained as painter, Mary Reid Kelley creates narrative videos set within her own stylised black and white drawings. In her works, her characters – all roles usually played by the artist – move through black-and-white scenery and speak in poetic verse written by the artist. Beginning with a video exploring the Greek myth of the Minotaur, a second video tells about the Minotaur’s family history, rich with bawdy double-entendres and visual language. The third work of the trilogy premiers in Reid Kelley’s Hammer Project. A mix of Greek cartoon, slapstick, and multidimensional wordplay, the artist’s videos explore the roles of women, sexuality, language, and art historical tropes.
