Max Ernst

Max Ernst: Pietà ou la révolution la nuit, 1923

An exhibition dedicated to Max Ernst, the great pictorial inventor. A selection of 180 paintings, collages, and sculptures, as well as relevant examples of illustrated books and documents from all periods, discoveries, and techniques, thereby introduce his life and oeuvre within a biographic and historical context. An early protagonist of Dadaism, a pioneer of Surrealism, and the inventor of such sophisticated techniques as collage, frottage, grattage, decalcomania, and oscillation, his work withdraws from catchy categorisation. From his inventiveness in handling pictorial and inspirational techniques, the breaks between his countless work phases, and his switching back and forth between themes, what remains is a consistence in terms of contradiction.
