MIKHAIL KARASIK: Colour is optics

Mikhail Karasik - Color is Optics

Exhibition, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands, until 25 September
“In visual perception, a colour is almost never seen as it really is – as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art. In order to use colour effectively it is necessary to recognise that colour deceives continually.” –Josef Albers, Interaction of Colour. Russian artist Mikhail Karasik specialises in graphics; in particular, art books of lithographs. A series of graphic works was used as the starting point for this library exhibition, which he made in response to a manual on colour theory by Mikhail Matyushin, Spravotsjnik po tsvetoe (Reference on Colour), published in 1932. In this way, the exhibition provides a summary on the theme of colour in the 20th century.
