Muslim In New York Highlights From The Photography Collection
Exhibition, Museum of the City of New York, New York, US.
Muslims have been woven into the fabric of New York since the city’s origins as New Amsterdam, and today its diverse Muslim community con itutes an estimated 3% of the city’s population, with people living in all five boroughs. Featured here are 34 images by four photographers who have documented Muslim New Yorkers from the mid-20th to the early 21st century. The works cover both immigrant populations and natives, including converts, the long-standing African-American community, and a growing Latino Muslim community, as well as Arab Muslims from the early 2000s and Muslim New Yorkers in the early 2010s. All have greatly enriched the life of the city.
