The cabinet of curiosities of Franco Clivio, in Mudac, Lausanne, Switzerland, until 09 February 2014
For several decades now, this creator and lecturer has, with a passion and a rare perspicacity, gone about collecting everyday objects. These he classes by functions, or system typologies, materials or formal families. This exhibition, which he himself devised, features a significant selection of his discoveries. The objects, often anonymously designed, pay homage to the ingenuity of the craftsmen and engineers who provided solutions to a variety of problems. Addressed are issues linked to an original and its copies, to the model that enables a whole range of products to be developed, or else to the old but still current issue of the choice of materials – natural or artificial – and the techniques these bring into play. A generous presentation in a playful, pedagogical, and at times poetic vein.
