Praneet Soi - Srinagar
Exhibition, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Netherlands.
On display is a new installation by Indian artist Praneet Soi who lives and works alternately in Amsterdam and Calcutta. Soi conducted research into the complicated history of Srinagar, an Indian city in the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Working with local artisans, he created a series of patterned tiles in papier-mâché, a technology that entered the country with the arrival of Sufism from Iran. The ancient geometric patterns on the tiles are complemented with the artist's own visual language. On the surrounding walls are a series of texts that Soi accumulated in Srinagar, accompanied by image distortions of anamorphosis, as a means to articulate a parallel narrative. Alongside these is a slideshow that explores the workings of ancient patterns within the local architecture, which are fragmented and alienated to allow the formation of motifs.
