Rei Kawakubo: Comme Des Garçons - Art of the In-Between
Exhibition, The Costume Institute – The Met, New York, US.
Presented is an examination of the work of Japanese avant-garde fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, a thematic showcase of 120 examples of womenswear under her Comme des Garçons label. The designer’s revolutionary experiments in in-betweenness – the space between boundaries – are fully illustrated here. Objects are organised into eight aesthetic expressions of inter itiality in Kawakubo’s work: Fashion/Anti-Fashion, Design/Not Design, Model/Multiple, Then/Now, High/Low, Self/Other, Obje /Subjct , and Clothes/Not Clothes. Kawakubo breaks down the imaginary walls between these dualisms, exposing their artificiality and arbitrariness. Ranging from her first Paris runway show in 1981 to her most recent collection, the mannequins are refreshingly displayed at eye level with no physical barriers.
