Sigalit Landau: Phoenician Sand Dance

Mermaids [Erasing the Border of Azkelon], 2011; video, 11'03

Exhibition, MACBA, Barcelona, Spain, until 15 February 2015.
The transition from the 20th to the 21st century has left deep marks in the configuration of the planet and therefore in the way it can be represented. The consolidation of economic globalisation, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the break-up of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of new political entities in Europe led to a redesigning of the borders, capitals, centres, and peripheries: new worlds within the old world. It was in this context of the change of an era that Sigalit Landau began her career in the mid-1990s. Her sculptural works deal with symbols, images, and narratives that reflect her historical, personal, and cultural condition.
