Exhibition, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, USA, 17 October 17 – 14 November 2015
Svenja Deininger constructs each of her oil paintings. Working organically, she focuses on form, composition, and light. The works are quiet, with a visual simplicity and an atmospheric sense of place. She imagines her paintings as words in a sentence that combine together to form a story. Her works fall within that grey zone between a structured set of parameters and the randomness of improvisation. They are the fruitful etudes of arduous labour. They are worthy of contemplation, palimpsests that have run out of room for the next layer. These paintings are erasures and deletions of indecision, mishap, and circumstances of untold tribulations. They are alive in the body as much as the mind.
