Tomás Saraceno: In Orbit
Exhibition, K21 Ständehaus, Düsseldorf, Germany.
Hovering beneath the glass dome of the K21 at a height of 25 metres is the gigantic spatial installation entitled in orbit, the work of artist Tomás Saraceno. It appears as a surreal landscape and is reminiscent of a sea of clouds. Saraceno modelled this on a spider’s web, working together with scientists and scholars from the realms of the arts, philosophy, and the natural sciences in order to pursue a visionary objective: the floating city of the future (the Aerocene Project). Having opened at the end of March, this long-term project is the artist’s response to the escalating ecological crisis and the increasing uninhabitability of the Earth.
