'Yellow' in Copenhagen
A colorful exhibition by British artist Simon Callery and Danish artist Torgny Wilcke
The Copenhagen based gallery Officinet presents YELLOW, a two-person collaborative painting show with new works by British artist Simon Callery and Danish artist Torgny Wilcke.
For this show the two artists agreed to work with the colour yellow as a unifying element. Each artist has produced large-scale works to be placed in dialogue to create a spatial whole.
Wilcke presents painted wood and steel floor-based works and a suspended circular work in relation to Callery’s soft, open bodied, multi-part step paintings. Colour is perceived as a material, equal to the canvas, steel or wood. Line is repeated again and again - the by-product of constructing with lengths of painted rough sawn timber or by hanging numerous sewn canvasses at 90º to the wall. These works share the geometry – and sometimes the purpose - of the practical everyday objects that we are surrounded by at home or at work, such as furniture or shelving.
Presenting these works within the design context at Officinet is intended to draw attention to the relationship between materiality and functionality in painting. This exhibition is timed to bring these works together at a moment where the roles of the traditional materials in painting have been rethought and reassigned in the work of both artists. This collaboration reveals a shared common ground in contemporary painting strategies emerging simultaneously in Copenhagen and London.
