DAMNº selects at MDW19: Nendo x Wonderglass
Nendo's Oki Sato collaborated with Venetian brand WonderGlass on Melt – a collection of gravity formed furniture and table top objects made of molten glass. The point here is the complex production process. Sato was inspired by the workshop where he watched artisans following the peculiarities of their materials. With glass this led to a process of laying hot glass sheets over steel rods to allow the natural drape of the material to create a form. ‘In a way, doing less and achieving more is the most complicated thing to do,’ says Sato. The use of glass in furniture design is unusual given that it breaks easily, but WonderGlass remains focused on pushing the boundaries and capabilities of cast glass with a new moulding technology that avoids large-scale moulds.
