Conrad Shawcross - 'The Optic Cloak'

Exhibiton, NOW Gallery, Greenwich Peninsula, London, UK.

September 1, 2016
Currently the youngest Royal Academician, British artist Conrad Shawcross has created a major new architectural intervention for the Greenwich Peninsula in London. Named The Optic Cloak, the landmark is newly complete. Drawing on sources as diverse as maritime camouflage, Cubism and Op Art, the monumental structure unites sophisticated engineering and complex optical research. Clad with perforated aluminium panels, a key aspect of the design is the creation of a moiré effect caused by the perforations on each panel being overlaid at different angles to each other, resulting in a dynamic and beguiling surface that appears to change continually..
